Project Detail
Objective on the basis of need

1. To improve the thermal performance of brick kiln by 10%.

2. Implementation of the technology at five commercial brick kiln unit.

3. To generate a detailed report on temperatures and emissions from various zones of brick kiln using different fuels for one operating season

Executive summary of the proposed project (In 250 words)

India is the second largest clay brick manufacturer in the world after China. It is also one of the major coal consuming sectors of India. The most prevalent Fixed Chimney Bull’s Trench (FCBT) type brick kiln produces around 80% of the first grade quality brick. This can be improved using heat efficient methods. With reference to this, an air circulation system has been developed to improve the thermal efficiency of the brick kilns. The brick kiln has mainly four zones: the drying zone, the preheating zone, the firing/combustion zone, and the cooling zone. The invented system increase the heat transfer rate from the surface of the fired bricks in the cooling section and supplying pre-heated air to the firing zone of the brick kiln. This provides a uniform heating in the firing zone of the brick kiln and thus increased the percentage of top quality bricks to 90%, an increment of 12.5% from the conventional. The concept has been proved and implemented at a high draft zig-zag brick kiln. It is proposed to further refine the technology through field trial studies and implement the technology in atleast 5 nos. of brick kilns.

Technology Readiness Level (If not a new project but an advancement of existing know how)

TRL 6

Outomes or Deliverables

The project outcome is a brick kiln mounting that will lead to a 10% improvement in thermal efficiency. This would result in an annual coal savings of the order of 2.5 to 5.0 million tons/year in brick firing operation and associated CO2 emission reduction of the order of 4.5 to 9.0 million tons/year; significant reduction in air pollution (including SPM, black carbon, CO); improvement in profitability of brick enterprises; and improvement of working conditions for millions of workers employed in brick kilns.
