| Objective on the basis of need | 1.Identification of educational institutes (schools and colleges) to promote the concept of community gardening as ‘herbanization’ in school premises and available degraded patches. 2.Promoting involvement of the school going children and the youth in colleges to understand the values and benefits of neighborhood gardens and urban green spaces by active involvement in tree observations, ecosystem services assessments & the changes due to urbanization. 3.Ecosystem health assessment of critical wintering and stop-over wetland sites for migratory birds delineation of their preferable breeding grounds to assess threats to migratory birds and their habitats by involving citizen science approaches. 4.Development of an website and interactive blog involving citizen efforts and inspiring stories from the project activities. |
| Executive summary of the proposed project (In 250 words) | Green spaces are an essential component of healthy, sustainable, and habitable cities. Increased or enhanced urban green space has been demonstrated to benefit all demographic groups in terms of health, social, and environmental advantages. Interventions in urban green spaces have the ability to influence a variety of outcomes, including environmental risk exposure, lifestyles and behavioral elements, health and well-being, social equality, and overall quality of life. Urban areas in India are experiencing rapid infrastructure and population growth, which has resulted in a massive reduction in size and deterioration of urban green spaces. The proposed project promotes social change by targeting the children and youth and creating an environmentally cultured society by inculcating environmental awareness and scientific temper amongst the volunteers and engaging them in long-term commitment through developing environmental consciousness for the conservation of remaining green islands aimed at restoration and sustainable utilization of urban natural resources and building a resilient ecosystem. Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, 2015 (AMRUT) promotes development of sustainable and resilient cities. The land use arrangements in Indian city areas are already exhausted for infrastructure development. In rapid urban transition scenario faced by the cities, the natural and managed public blue green spaces, drainage basins of polluted river, are under tremendous pressure of destruction and degradation in the upcoming years. Air pollution, increasing frequency and intensity of heat islands and flash floods are important concerns. It is essential to recognize and integrate resilience as core agenda of smart city development in line with the global sustainable development goals, particularly SDG 11 of making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by 2030. Proposed project aims to develop environmental conscious and promote awareness through capacity-building of young professionals by creating a comprehensive program of work to encourage institutions and organizations to engage their participation and instill scientific understanding of their surrounding ecosystem. This initiative will create a generation with well-informed, insightful, and innovative contributions to make towards conservation research and decision-making processes in future. |
| Technology Readiness Level (If not a new project but an advancement of existing know how) | New Project |
| Outomes or Deliverables | 1. Endorsing human-nature interaction by engaging students in various community level activities like Eco-clubs and birdwatching. 2. Inculcating environmental awareness and knowledge amongst the youth and children in their formative years, also making special efforts for including children with disabilities and also maintaining gender balance in the program so as maintain equity in education for all. 3. Promoting scientific awareness amongst the participants regarding the variations in flora and fauna due to ongoing disturbances and their natural characteristics through various activities like EIA, birdwatching, Eco-clubs etc. 4. Promoting herbanization (plantation of various herbs with medicinal/flowering/air pollution tolerant/noise attenuation etc. properties) on roadside available areas in the neighborhood of education institutes 5. Promoting plantation drives and educating children about its importance 6. Working with an objective of greening a particular neighborhood each at a time with the help of community gardening and restoration programs. |
| Project aligned with which most relevant UN SDGs | Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities & Communities Goal 13 - Climate Action Goal 15 - Life on Land |
| Duration (In years) | 3 years |
| Expected Impact | 1. Community interactions with nature will improve physical and mental wellbeing of the volunteers and will also make them scientifically aware regarding the impacts of their activities on environment around them. 2. Involving specially abled children will not only improve their mental and physical well-being, but will also enhance cooperation and understanding skills amongst other students leading to greater behavioral consciousness. Environmental alertness in the students from their formative years is a way of creating interests among students that will promote life-long learning inquisitiveness amongst them. 3. Lead to an improved understanding and curiosity amongst the participants regarding environment which might develop interests in further research and scientific knowledge gain. 4. Will instill the habit amongst the participants and will motivate them to continue the plantation drives and include more and more people in this activity, eventually creating a green neighborhood. 5. Tree planting is one of the simplest and most effective ways of tackling climate change caused by greenhouse gas. As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), a major greenhouse gas in the atmosphere which in turn helps in combating rising temperatures and global warming. 6. Increase in green cover amidst the urban development also leading to increase in permeable surfaces for groundwater recharge |
