Project Detail
Objective on the basis of need

Phytochemical fingerprinting is reliable for assessing the quality of herbal products and raw materials. Comprehensive phytochemical profiling can be achieved using advanced techniques such as LC-HRMSMS analysis and NMR tools. This kind of study aims to identify a few abundant phytochemicals and create a detailed profile of known and unknown small organic molecules. This comprehensive profile is crucial in defining the true identity of the products and raw materials. Such thorough profiling is essential for identifying genuine products and raw materials, vital for human health and well-being.

Executive summary of the proposed project (In 250 words)

Phytochemicals from herbal products and raw materials are routinely identified by identifying the abundant compounds to ascertain their identity. However, basic research in establishing a comprehensive phytochemical profile is lacking. Sophisticated analytical tools such as LC-HR-MSMS and 2D NMR techniques aid in comprehensively identifying phytochemicals. Popular herbal products and raw materials used in holistic medicine will be selected for the present study for comprehensive phytochemical profiling by LC-HR-MSMS studies and by comparison with the database for target metabolite identification. In the process, the scope of identification of non-targeted metabolites is highly warranted for isolation and exhaustive NMR analysis. In the present study, LC-HR-MSMS workflows are selected in such a way as to obtain unambiguous identification by selected ion monitoring in positive and negative switching along with their fragment information. Existing global databases will be utilized to identify targeted metabolites/phytochemicals. The unknown compounds will be isolated using chromatographic tools and subjected to a suite of 2D NMR experimentation for identification. After the successful identification of known and unknown phytochemicals, the MS profile will be translated to a less-sophisticated chromatographic profile for future users for QC purposes.
