| Objective on the basis of need | To educate the farmers on Good Agriculture Practices on production of quality essential oils; Providing quality planting material of menthol mint and connect to the market for better economic returns. Creation of livelihood in rural areas |
| Executive summary of the proposed project (In 250 words) | CSIR-CIMAP has the expertise in development of improved agro-technologies in different cultivars of menthol mint. Developed agro-techniques have helped to a great extent in production of medicinal and aromatic crops especially menthol mint. As menthol-mint is grown in summer season, require frequent irrigation prior to onset of monsoon rains, less water requiring package of practices will be helpful in reducing water demand of the crop. CSIR-CIMAP has team of experts which are dedicated towards good agricultural practices in the field of crop production, crop protection, organic farming, harvesting improved distillation and processing technologies. CSIR- CIMAP has demonstrated many such agro technologies by collaborating with various industries. CSIR-CIMAP has also developed of innovative package of practices i.e. Early Mint Technology (EMT) in order to mitigate the existing problems in mint cultivation like (i) Limited cropping period,( ii) crop loss due to early rains, (iii) high water requirement,(iv) higher cost of weed management,(v) difficulties in obtaining second harvest , (vi) production of planting material in water logged areas and (vii) fall in price of oil due to introduction of synthetic menthol etc; being faced by menthol mint farmers and industry. Components of EMT are: (i) Ridge planting. (ii) Production of plantlets under poly cover during winter (iii) Withdrawal of irrigation about 15 days before the harvest. This package has the potential to save at least 30-45 days of total crop span, reduce input cost by 30% especially by reducing water requirement and fuel consumption cost in weed management and finally reduces the cost of per kg oil production about Rs. 150-200 with 30% increase in the productivity over traditional method |
| Technology Readiness Level (If not a new project but an advancement of existing know how) | TRL-9 |
| Outomes or Deliverables | - Farmers will be harvested the mentha crop and distilled the essential oil timely. - Farmers will be collected the maximum oil recovery in per unit area. - Average oil yield was recorded to be approximately will be better after adoption of improved varieties. - Farmers were very happy with the newly introduced improved variety and they will get additional essential oil comparatively other varieties. - During the training/education programme, experts from CSIR-CIMAP will be interacted with the farmers how they can generate the planting material from existing crops for the next season in a very small area. |
