Project Detail
Objective on the basis of need

The objective for developing a compact three-wheeler-based electric septic tank cleaning machine and wastewater management system could be framed around addressing critical sanitation and environmental challenges, especially in urban and rural areas with limited infrastructure. Develop a compact and manoeuvrable three-wheeler-based vehicle that can access narrow streets and confined urban or rural spaces, where traditional large vehicles cannot operate. Leverage electric vehicle technology to reduce carbon emissions, minimize environmental impact, and provide a quieter, more energy-efficient waste management solution compared to conventional fuel-based machines. Create a low-cost, affordable solution for local municipalities, housing societies, and small businesses, encouraging widespread adoption in areas with limited budgets. Explore technologies that allow for reuse of treated wastewater for horticulture purposes, or groundwater recharge, contributing to sustainable resource management.

Executive summary of the proposed project (In 250 words)

The proposed project aims to develop a compact three-wheeler-based electric septic tank cleaning machine and wastewater management system to address the growing sanitation challenges in densely populated urban and underserved rural areas. Traditional large vehicles are often unsuitable for navigating narrow streets or confined spaces, leaving many areas with inadequate septic tank cleaning services and untreated wastewater disposal. This innovative project integrates electric vehicle technology with a mechanized septic tank cleaning system to offer an environmentally friendly, efficient, and cost-effective solution. By utilizing a compact three-wheeler, the system will ensure easy access to difficult-to-reach locations, while the electric powertrain will minimize carbon emissions, noise pollution, and operational costs. The septic tank cleaning mechanism will automate the safe and hygienic extraction of sludge, eliminating the need for manual scavenging and significantly improving public health outcomes. Additionally, the project incorporates a wastewater treatment unit capable of processing extracted waste on-site or for safe transport to treatment facilities. Treated water could potentially be reused for agriculture, industrial applications, or safe discharge, contributing to sustainable resource management. The compact design, low operational costs, and environmentally sustainable approach make this system ideal for local municipalities, housing societies, and small businesses. The project seeks to revolutionize sanitation services by pro enhancing public hygiene, reducing environmental pollution, and improving the quality of life in underserved communities. This system represents a critical step toward achieving cleaner cities, safer communities, sustainable urban development. The project aligns with the Indian government’s initiatives like the (Clean India Mission) and laws against manual scavenging. With a focus on cost and scalability, the project envisi significantly improving sanitation infrastructure and public health while promoting environmental sustainability. viding a scalable and affordable solution Swachh Bharat Mission ons widespread adoption across urban and rural areas, , and -effectiveness

Technology Readiness Level (If not a new project but an advancement of existing know how) TRL-4 (Proof of Concept Readiness) The team has the knowhow related to the septic tank cleaning related product and technology. The team at CMERI has developed a Mechanised septic tank cleaning machineto address the hazardous and labor-intensive process of manual scavenging and septic cleaning in India. This innovative solution is designed to automate the cleaning of drains and sewers, providing a safer, more hygienic, and efficient method for sanitation workers.
