Project Detail
Objective on the basis of need

1. To screen the rice varieties suitable for cultivation in Palakkad with reduced water requirement.

2. To establish trial plots for demonstrating the impact of proposed intervention on water requirements for rice cultivation with respect to current practices.

Executive summary of the proposed project (In 250 words)

Data of all the rice varieties with short duration and high water use efficiency will be collected from farmers and Kerala Agriculture University, Vellanikkara, Thrissur. They will be screened for productivity and other characteristics. The best 5 rice varieties will be selected for further analysis. Under unstressed conditions, we'll cultivate selected varieties of rice in pots alongside the commonly cultivated Jyothi variety in Palakkad. During the growing period, we'll assess their leaf photosynthesis rates, transpiration levels, and instantaneous water use efficiency. These measurements will be used to identify high water use efficient varieties for further field trials. One of the rice variety with high water use efficiency identified from screening will be opt for field trial. Trial plots will be arranged in a farmer’s field in a randomized block design (RBD). Four treatments (two varieties and two cultivation practices) will be considered for the field trial with three replications.
