| Objective on the basis of need | The project aims to address the growing need for integrating traditional herbal medicine with modern scientific research while fostering skill development and knowledge sharing. Despite the rich heritage of herbal medicine in India, there is a lack of standardized research, skill development, and collaborative platforms to validate and scale traditional knowledge. This project seeks to: • Promote evidence-based research on medicinal plants and herbal formulations. • Build capacity among researchers, students, and farmers through skill development programs. • Create a collaborative ecosystem for innovation and commercialization of herbal medicine. • Preserve and sustainably utilize traditional knowledge for community health and economic development. |
| Executive summary of the proposed project (In 250 words) | The proposed project, "Collaborative Research and Skill Development in Herbal Medicine," aims to establish a multidisciplinary platform for advancing research, skill development, and innovation in herbal medicine. By leveraging traditional knowledge and modern scientific techniques, the project will focus on validating the therapeutic efficacy of medicinal plants, developing standardized herbal formulations, and creating sustainable practices for cultivation and processing. The project will involve collaboration between academic institutions, industry partners, and local communities. Key activities include organizing workshops and training programs on herbal medicine research, formulation development, and sustainable cultivation practices. Additionally, the project will facilitate open-access research and knowledge sharing through publications, databases, and online platforms. The outcomes will include the development of validated herbal formulations, skill enhancement for stakeholders, and the creation of a sustainable supply chain for medicinal plants. The project aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Infrastructure and Sustainable Consumption (SDG 9), Life on Land (SDG 15), Industry, Innovation, and Production (SDG 12). By bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and modern science, this project will contribute to the preservation of herbal medicine, improve healthcare access, and empower communities through skill development and economic opportunities. |
| Technology Readiness Level (If not a new project but an advancement of existing know how) | We at NIIST already conducting “FIVE-DAY TRAINING PROGRAM ON COMPREHENSIVE HERBAL DRUG DEVELOPMENT”, and taught an advancement of existing knowledge, leveraging traditional herbal medicine and integrating it with modern pharmaceutical sciences, many students were get trained through the program. The current proposal the research and development efforts will focus on optimizing formulations, enhancing bioavailability, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The project builds on existing know-how in herbal medicine research and formulation development, with a TRL of 5-6. It aims to advance this knowledge through collaborative research, standardization, and commercialization, potentially reaching TRL 8-9 by the end of the project. |
| Outomes or Deliverables | • Development of 3-5 validated herbal formulations for specific health conditions. • Establishment of a collaborative research platform involving academia, industry, and communities. • Training of 500+ stakeholders (researchers, students, farmers) in herbal medicine research and sustainable practices. • Creation of an open-access database on medicinal plants and their therapeutic applications. • Publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals and dissemination through workshops and conferences. • Development of sustainable cultivation and processing protocols for 10+ medicinal plants. |
| Project aligned with which most relevant UN SDGs | Goal 3 - Good Health & Well-Being Goal 4 - Quality Education Goal 9 - Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure Goal 12 - Responsible Consumption & Production Goal 15 - Life on Land Goal 17 - Partnerships For The Goals |
| Duration (In years) | 3 years |
| Expected Impact | • Improved healthcare access through affordable and validated herbal formulations. • Empowerment of rural communities through skill development and economic opportunities in medicinal plant cultivation and processing. • Preservation and sustainable utilization of traditional knowledge and biodiversity. • Enhanced research capabilities and innovation in herbal medicine. • Strengthened collaboration between academia, industry, and communities for sustainable development. |
| Implementation model (self- implemented/ outsourced partnership) | • Self-Implemented: Core research, training, and platform development will be managed by NIIST • Outsourced Partnership: Collaboration with academic institutions, industry partners, and NGOs for specific activities such as training programs, cultivation projects, and commercialization. |
