| Objective on the basis of need | To develop a 50 gm scale process for producing ortho, meta, para phenylenediamines using ortho, meta, para nitro aniline hydrogenation routes based on the proof of concept data. |
| Executive summary of the proposed project (In 250 words) | Historically phenylenediamines were used in the manufacturing of dyes and dye intermediates till 1950. However, after that, these compounds became important starting materials for various polymerization processes, and most of the phenylenediamines produced now are being consumed for the polymerization. Aramid textile fibers, which have the application of reinforcing plastics for aerospace and sporting applications and for a variety of other uses where high strength and tensile modulus are required, use p-phenylenediamines as raw material; this fiber has only two suppliers, DuPont and Akzo. |
| Technology Readiness Level (If not a new project but an advancement of existing know how) | TRL 3 |
| Outomes or Deliverables | 1. A safe, cost-effective, ortho, meta, para nitroanilines catalytic hydrogenation process to produce ortho, meta, para phenylenediamines at 50 gm scale using the commercial catalyst. 2. Optimization of all the process parameters such as temperature, pressure, hydrogen feed rate, catalyst loading, reaction time, etc. 3. Catalyst recyclability study. 4. Separation and purification protocol for the product from the reaction mass. 5. Reaction calorimetry study of these reactions and their heat rate data generation. 6. Currently, we have this process at the POC stage at TRL 3; efforts will be made to achieve TRL 4 or 5 at the end of this project |
